I’ve been growing out bad haircuts for years. No exaggeration, years! The first few times it was shorter than I wanted or the layers felt weird but it wasn’t too big of a deal. But then, I had a haircut that was actually bad. Now, as a hairstylist I am more particular about my hair. But, this really was not good.
As a stylist I know that it happens. So, I would never bash another stylist or make a big fuss. But, after 2 or 3 other haircuts I didn’t like, I was so over my hair! Just over a year later, it’s finally getting to a point that I don’t hate it anymore. But, I wish it was longer – like it should be by now, lol. I’m sure many of you are in the same boat or just want your hair grow. So, today I’m sharing my personal tips for hair growth. These tips worked for me and as a stylist I would recommend them to my clients.

Hair Growth Tips
Biotin: This nutrient helps produce the hair protein called keratin. An increase in your diet may promote hair growth. Many people take it as a vitamin, like hair, skin and nails vitamins, and have great results. But, I will caution you if you’re acne prone like me. I’m hesitant to try it again now that my skin is better because it can cause breakouts. Naturally it’s found in foods like eggs, nuts, dairy products, berries and avocados.
Protein: After my last bad haircut, I decided to up my protein intake. Protein also helps produce keratin, along with many other benefits, but my focus was to grow my hair. If my nails grow too, I’m okay with that! I make protein smoothies a couple of times a week and try to pick snacks that are high in it. I do feel like my hair is growing faster. Even my stylist has noticed!
Essential Oils: After my normal shampoo and conditioner, I apply an essential oil spray that promotes hair growth in sections, near my scalp. The spray I make contains Cedarwood, Rosemary, Lavender, distilled water and a splash of witch hazel. It smells nice, so there’s that. 🙂
Water: Drinking water helps with so many things. So, drink an extra glass, or 2, for your hair.
Reduce Heat: It’s true that heat can be bad for your hair. I don’t avoid heat all together but I try to limit the amount I use on my hair. And I use a heat protectant! This leave-in protects from heat. I’m currently using this blow dry spray which provides protection from heat and a quicker blow dry. I just started using this because I heard good things about it. It’s under $5 and smells really good! I feel like it’s hard to find a good heat protectant. What’s your favorite?
Wash Less: I don’t wash my hair everyday because it tends to get dry. That doesn’t work for everyone, so if you need to wash everyday, then do it. BUT, if your hair is too dry and breaking (or could break), then try shampooing every other day instead. This dry shampoo is my favorite and saves my second day hair.
Reduce Tension: More tension creates a bigger risk of breakage. I finger comb when I can. If I wear my hair up for the gym or bed I use an Invisibobble. If you wear your hair up often, I suggest changing the placement. Consistently putting pressure/tension on the same spot can also cause hair breakage. Hair breakage is, obviously, the opposite of growth.
Of course, everyone’s hair is different so what keeps your hair healthy can be different from mine. So, as I always say, ask your stylist! They know your hair, especially if you’ve been going to the same one for a while. I will add for this post – vitamins and supplements may not be the best option for you. Check with your doctor before making changes to your diet.
