I’ve only tried a couple new foundations since my last review but I wanted to get this one out as soon as I could since this product is big right now. I recently shared my thoughts on Tarte Shape Tape Foundation briefly on my Instagram page but I wanted to talk about it more in-depth here on my blog. I’ve seen a lot of complaints but overall I’m happy with how long it stays matte and how great it makes my skin look and feel.

Most people were excited for the release of this foundation because they love the concealer. Believe it or not, I never tried the concealer because I was convinced it would be too heavy under my eyes. So, even though I had never tried the concealer, when the Ulta Beauty Advisor told me more about the matte formula I was like the emoji with open arms – GIMME! Although my skin is combo, the oily parts are pretty darn oily so a lightweight formula that covers my acne scars while staying matte sounds like just what I need!

Before I tell you if I like Tarte Shape Tape Foundation, let’s break down what I look for.

Coverage: I’m not always a fan of full coverage foundations because I think they look too heavy on my skin. But this one doesn’t! It does start to look heavy in some areas as it sits but I don’t think other people would notice.

Consistency: Tarte claims that it feels lightweight on the skin and it really does. I like applying with my favorite buffing brush for easy application or a sponge for more coverage.

Longevity: I have a hard time finding a foundation that is matte enough because my t-zone gets out of control with oil. But this foundation does stay matte all day. I’m in training this week 4 hours away from home and this is the only foundation I brought with me. It does start to get messy around my nose early in the day but I think that’s more because I have allergy issues and blow/wipe my nose 37 times before lunch. So it would be that way with any foundation. I blot at lunch time and add powder if needed. 13 or 14 hours after applying (8 hours of work and then dinner and whatever else we need to do before heading back to the hotel) it does start to break up in my areas with the most oil.

Color: Another thing I have a hard time finding is a foundation that is light enough to match my neck. There’s been a lot of talk about the shades for this line. Specifically, the lack of available shades. I agree it isn’t what it should be. Whether it be only warm tones, mostly cool tones or nothing dark or light enough. Shades can be hard to match.  I tend to look better with cool toned shades but I recently tried a foundation with a cool tone and BOY- it wasn’t my look. I have the shade Fair Sand and I’m really please with the way it looks on my skin. It’s neutral with just the right amount of  warmth that matches my skin very well.

Scent: Scent really only matters to me when it’s too strong. If there’s any scent with this one it’s mild.

Other Facts About Tarte Shape Tape Foundation

According to Tarte, this foundation is vegan, oil-free, and smooths skin for an airbrushed full-coverage look. It has the same concealer type applicator as the Shape Tape Concealer which I really like. The wand makes it really easy to apply and doesn’t make a mess. My favorite part? The formula limits oil and shine without major creasing or flaking. AND I”m really impressed that it doesn’t look too cakey for most of the day. It also contains vitamin E and mineral pigments but, like all Tarte products, is made without parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfates, and gluten. That’s actually the reason I was first interested in Tarte products. I started with Amazonian Clay Foundation which I’ll have to review really soon!

I bought the foundation at Ulta. It IS a little pricey at $39. But as someone who struggles with acne scarring and allergy issues, I want products directly touching my face/skin to have less of the bad ingredients like this one does. If you know of any others, especially at a lower price point- please let me know! Oh and I can’t forget that Tarte is a cruelty free brand!

Yay or Nay? The pros definitely outweigh the cons so for me this foundation is a yay! I use my foundation with this Bare Minerals primer  and Shape Tape Concealer in shade Fair. I’ve been setting it with Coty Air Spun Setting Spray, this powder brush, and Milani Setting Spray . These products work so well together! My face looks bright and highlighted all day. I’m not used to that but I think I like it.  It definitely helps me look awake, haha. Yes, it’s drying, and dries quickly at that, BUT I like that. My tip is to apply it one area at a time- which is easy to do with the concealer like applicator.

I will note- you won’t like this if you have dry skin. I’ve had a few dry patches from acne fighting products since buying this foundation and although the foundation mostly stayed in place it didn’t look good. Try the hydrating formula instead!
